Top 40 Singles of 2008: Jeremy McComb - This Town Needs A Bar (#19)

Jeremy McComb may be new on the Country music scene but that doesn't mean that he cannot select great tunes.  His ear for great material has garnered him a second entrant into Roughstock's Top 40 Country Singles of 2008 countdown.

Very few artists are lucky enough to release songs that truly stand out as some of any given year's best.  Typically superstar artists will be the ones to receive multiple accolades but Jeremy McComb isn't the typical artist. We already selected Jeremy's single "Cold" as our 37th favorite single of 2008 and now he returns with our 19th favorite in "This Town Needs A Bar."

Recorded for his debut album, "My Side Of Town," This ballad starts with a soft guitar lick, adds in some haunting b-3 and fiddle fills and then Jeremy sings "Who builds a town without a lonely neon light?" and the immediate impact of the song is felt.  It's a simple ballad that asks the simply states "This Town Needs A Bar, cause I need a drink, a little place not too far, where I don't have to think, wonder who you're with, don't wonder where you are, that might do the trick, this town needs a bar."  It's a song where McComb is able to showcase his stellar vocals as he sings the lonely lyric.  Fans wondering where their traditional country themes have gone should be able to enjoy this fiddle-laced track (there's even a solo towards the end of the song!) about wanting a watering hole that's close to home so that he can get the woman off of his mind.

Just like he did with "Cold," Jeremy McComb has certainly showcased a stellar talent for singing a forlorn ballad.  He also had a single in Texas called "Wagon Wheel," which was a remake of the OCMS song.  Talent like this deserves a bigger spotlight and hopefully in 2009 radio will wake up and give Jeremy a shot.
