Album Review: Frank Foster - “Good Country Music”

Rising independent country star delivers his second album released in 2016.

With his sixth album Good Country Music, Frank Foster continues to set about a highly-successful independent path.  Working with his band at the “Welcome To 1979” studio (a studio known for analog recording), Foster produced his new album with his band playing the tracks live in the studio all together, the way it used to be. And that attention to old school detail shows over the duration of Good Country Music.

Frank Foster’s second release of 2016, Good Country Music is certainly a ear-tastic listen. Blending country rock melodies with classic songwriting, the album finds Foster sounding like a hillbilly Bruce Springsteen at times and a second-coming of Waylon Jennings in other places. These are songs that are about people who come to his shows, the hard working blue collar people like Foster himself.

“Good Country Music” and “Unwind” will work well in Foster’s growing set list of original material — all of which are songs he has written solely by himself. “Pete And John” is simply stated but a strong story song while “Louisiana” is a sweet piano-laced ode to his home state. Fans looking for some more of that heartland charm should check out “Back Road Buzz,” “Where The Road Gets Rough” and “Come On Over.”

From the moment he broke into the Top 10 of the Top Selling albums chart a couple of years ago, Frank Foster has had Music Row’s attention and while he probably could’ve partnered with any label in town given his success as an indie act, Foster continues to do things his own way and is paving a new way for like-minded artists. Good Country Music may never score major radio airplay hits but that doesn’t mean it can’t compete with the big dogs. Frank Foster is an intriguing talent and his latest album Good Country Music is as good as anything else released in 2016 as it’s often compelling, at times energetic and perhaps the most of all: deeply entertaining.

Frank Foster and his band, once again, have produced an album that I can't get enough of! I wish I could listen continuously! His music NEVER gets old! In fact, the more I listen, the more I love it! His music is what country music is supposed to be!

So I have listened to the new album.....from start to finish. Frank, I've been trying to think of what to say and the word that keeps popping in my head is simply WOW!!! Let me start by saying that I have loved each and every album you've put out. I listen to them from start to finish and sometimes I shuffle around them. And on each album there has always been at least one song that spoke to me, touched me, made me smile.....this album though! I had goosebumps. Not for one song, not for two, but for all ten!! I got choked up, teared up and I cried a little. Paying homage to your home state with Louisiana....amazing! Honoring your father and your uncle......heartwarming. And there aren't even words to describe how I felt listening to Carolina Blue. Hauntingly beautiful. The lyrics to Come on over felt like our front porch on a Louisiana Saturday Night. And all the others in between.....simply magnificent. Hats off and congratulations!!!! Proud to be part of #FFNation!! Keep doing what u doing Frank!!!!
