The Weekly New Release Report: March 23, 2015

Our weekly report about all that's new in country music's sale racks.

Striking Matches lead the list of new albums out this week and it’s a rather short list, honestly but there are pre-orders from Reba, Darius Rucker out at iTunes and GooglePlay while new singles from Granger Smith, Reba, Darius Rucker, Chris Janson and Thompson Square have arrived as well.

Granger Smith - “Backroad Song” (Pioneer Music)
The lead single to his upcoming 4x4 EP (and follow-up to well-received Dirt Road Driveway), “Backroad Song” is ready to help the singer break (even further) into the mainstream with a catchy, radio-worthy single.

Reba “Love Somebody” Pre-Order (Starstruck/Nash Icon Records)
Reba shares a few new tracks from Love Somebody with her pre-order, the Top 40 country radio hit “Going Out Like That” and now the Jennifer Nettles duet “Enough.” The album was produced by James Stroud and Tony Brown (with Reba) and hits stores on April 14, 2015.

Striking Matches - "Nothing But The Silence" (I.R.S. Nashville Records)
The debut album from the duo behind a handful of well-received tracks recorded on the Nashville TV Show soundtracks the past couple of years. Signed as the flagship artist on the new I.R.S. Nashville Records label, Striking Matches (Sarah Zimmerman and Justin Davis) wrote each of the 11 tracks on Nothing But The Silence and it’s easy to see why his manager John Grady wanted to sign him to the label he now heads. Produced by Grammy-winning icon T Bone Burnett, Nothing But The Silence has a slight Americana vibe to the record while not being out of step with what the mainstream does either (though there is absolutely nothing even remotely ‘bro’ about the record either). Davis and Zimmerman harmonize well.

The standout tracks include lead single “Hangin’ On A Lie,” the funky and soulful “Make A Liar Out Of Me,” the title track, “Never Gonna Love Again” and “Like Lovers.” Our ultimate favorite here is “When The Right One Comes Along.” The kind of timeless love song that recalls the best songs of days gone by and songs that were once hits for people like Trisha Yearwood and Mary Chapin Carpenter. If you love great songwriting, playing and singing, do yourself a favor and pick up Nothing But The Silence.

Darius Rucker “Southern Style” Pre-Order (Capitol)
Set to be released next week, the Pre-order for Southern Style showcases Darius Rucker’s Top 5 lead single “Homegrown Honey” and the title track from the project (Which has 13 tracks in the regular version for a $7.99 pre-order price or $9.99 for the 15 track “Deluxe” version of the album.

Chris Janson “Buy Me A Boat” (Independent)
Newly independent thanks to Bigger Picture Entertainment, Chris Janson has just-released this track and it sure has the sound of a big ole hit for him and one that’s sure to get radio stations paying attention to the co-writer of “Truck Yeah” and singer of “Better I Don’t” and “Cut Me Some Slack.”

Thompson Square “Trans Am” (Stoney Creek Records)
T2 returns with an uptempo road song with a careless feel to the lyrics and sound of “Trans Am,” a song that’s likely to connect with nostalgic fans who were reared during the 1970s and1980s heyday of the iconic Pontiac muscle car.

Will Hoge “Small Town Dreams” Pre-Order (Cumberland Recordings)
Features the Top 50 hit “Middle Of America” and “Growing Up Around Here and “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To.” This album is the follow-up to his previous release, Never Give In. This album was produced by Marshall Altman.

Kristian Bush “Southern Gravity” Pre-Order (Streamsound)
An album that promises to shed a light on how much the ‘background’ member of Sugarland (behind vocalist Jennifer Nettles) had to really do with the catchy hooks and irresistible songs the duo released over the years, Southern Gravity’s pre-order features “Trailer Hitch” (A Top 20 hit) and the title track.
