Breaking News: Little Jimmy Dickens Passes Away

The 94-year-old Grand Ole Opry legend passed away after suffering a stroke over the holidays.

With heavy hearts, Nashville mourns the loss of one of their greatests. Grand Ole Opry star Little Jimmy Dickens passed away. Dickens was being held in a Nashville hospital since Christmas Day when he suffered a stroke. He passed the afternoon of January 2 at the age of 94. Dickens died of cardiac arrest.

Dickens is survived by his wife Mona Dickens, who he's been married to since 1971. They have two daughters -- Pamela Detert and Lisa King.

Dickens was the longest running member of the Opry, joining in 1948, and last performed at the Opry on December 20, 2014, singing “Out Behind The Barn” and delivering his trademark comedy.

"The Grand Ole Opry did not have a better friend than Little Jimmy Dickens,” shared Pete Fisher, Opry Vice President & General Manager.  “He loved the audience and his Opry family, and all of us loved him back.  He was a one-of-kind entertainer and a great soul whose spirit will live on for years to come."

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time however a public visitation and a public service is being planned.

Little Jimmy Dickens was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983.  Among his enduring classics are “Take An Old Cold Tater (And Wait),” “Country Boy,” “Out Behind The Barn” and “May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose.”

Grand Ole Opry legend Little Jimmy Dickens has been admitted to a Nashville area hospital where he is currently in critical condition. According to a press release serviced over the weekend, the icon was brought in on Christmas Day for an undisclosed illness.

Little Jimmy, who turned 94 on December 19, last performed on stage at the Grand Ole Opry on December 20 as part of his birthday celebration with fellow Opry members.

Dickens became a Grand Ole Opry member in 1948 and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983. Among his enduring classics are “Take An Old Cold Tater (And Wait),” “Country Boy,” “Out Behind The Barn” and “May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose.”

His wife, family and the Grand Ole Opry ask friends and fans around the world to keep the singer in their prayers.
