The Weekly Release Report: November 5, 2014

Ronnie Milsap and the Doobie Brothers lead the release schedule this week with unique projects.

The weekly release report features a batch of new releases anchored by a tribute album from Neal McCoy, a fun collaborative album from The Doobie Brothers and country stars and a massive, comprehensive box set from newly inducted Country Music Hall of Famer Ronnie Milsap.

The Lacs - Nothin' In Particular (Average Joes Entertainment/BackRoad Records)

The popular rural rappers deliver fans an 11 track collection of songs that have failed to make their previous three records. The album's title track kicks everything off while other standouts include "Field Party" with JJ Lawhorn, "Wylin (Remix)" with Bubba Sparxxx and Charlie Farley. "Let Your Country Hang Out" has a bit of swaggar while "Country Boy Downtime" has a laid-back feel to it. Fans of The Lacs and the whole rural rap movement should find something to enjoy on Nothing In Particular.

David Shelby - Oh Yeah (Highway South Records)

The Michigan native has issued his sophomore release, after last year's Rust Belt Cowboy. The growth between albums is huge and that may be because of the production from Charles English and Alabama's Teddy Gentry. The six songs here come from top writers like Chip Davis, Tony Haselden, Walker Hayes and John Ramey among others and standouts include "Podunk," "Ride It Out" and "Feet." Oh Yeah is a step in the right direction and should give Shelby a shot at radio hits, if he chooses that path.

Neal McCoy - Pride: A Tribute To Charley Pride [Deluxe Edition] (Slate Creek/Cracker Barrel)

Now available at Cracker Barrel stores in deluxe form with newly available tracks, Pride is a loving tribute from Neal McCoy to his hero and mentor, Charley Pride. The album features guests like Darius Rucker, Raul Malo and Trace Adkins. The talented showman takes on 13 iconic Pride tracks. You can read our original review of the 2013 release here. "Let Me Live" and "Why Baby Why" are additions to the Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores version. The iconic Garth Fundis produced the project.

Ronnie Milsap - The RCA Albums Collection (RCA Nashville/Legacy)

Legacy Recordings has recently started digging into their massive archives to bring older, classic music back to the world and like their 2013 comprehensive collection featuring Nilsson, they've compiled every one of Ronnie Milsap's 21 albums and put them together in a delightful box set. Featuring comprehenshive liner notes from Peter Cooper and Milsap himself, the box set showcases the complete musical arc of the Country Music Hall of Famer's rise to stardom and while a few of his 40 #1 hits are left off (those didn't appear on any of Milsap's studio or live albums for RCA), that's not really the point here, with many of these albums getting their due on CD and Digital for the first time ever. Other discs are re-issued for the first time in decades. Look for our comprehensive Deep Dive review of the box set soon.

The Doobie Brothers & Friends - Southbound (Arista Records Nashville)

Featuring superstars like Brad Paisley ("Rockin' Down The Highway"), ("Blake Shelton ("Listen To The Music"), Sara Evans ("What A Fool Believes"), Toby Keith ("Long Train Running"), Chris Young ("China Grove") and Zac Brown Band ("Black Water") among others, showcases The Doobie Brothers' classic hits in duet style. It's not unlike what Lionel Richie did with his Tuskegee album a few years back and like Richie's songs, many of these songs were born to be modern country songs, even if some were written and hits over 40 years ago. Casey James, Hunter Hayes, Charlie Worsham, Huey Lewis, Love and Theft, Tyler Farr and Jerrod Niemann.
