Darius Rucker Dishes on Love of Sports

Darius Rucker is not only a Country Music star but he's also an avid lover of sports. A frequent golfer, the Grammy-winning "Wagon Wheel" singer discusses his passion for sports and music in this report.

It is no secret that Darius Rucker is a lover of music and sports, maybe to an even balance.

“There are two kinds of seasons for me: football season and waiting for football season,” Rucker recently told Radio.com with a laugh. "My favorite teams are the [South Carolina] Gamecocks and the Miami Dolphins. I love it.”

Due to Rucker's music, he has been privileged to partake in some of sports biggest moments, including back in 1995 when Hootie & the Blowfish was tapped to perform the National Anthem during a Monday Night Football game at his beloved Dolphins’ Sun Life Stadium (then called "ProPlayer Stadium").

“[Dolphins quarterback] Dan Marino took the jersey off of his back and had it framed for me,” Rucker recalls. “It has dirt on it and everything. He sent over a game ball and a great letter. That’s my most prized item in my sports memorabilia collection.”

When it comes to his own love of playing sports, Rucker says just hand him a golf club!

"I play a lot, even on the road,” he says. “The other day I shot a 74, and the next day I shot an 84. It fluctuates like that, but it’s still my favorite thing to do. Once the spring hits, we play every day. Once you get over partying and sleeping in, it’s the best way to spend the mornings. I’m up at 8 o’clock every day now – what else am I going to do?”

Look for Rucker on the road where he is currently headlining his True Believers 2014 Tour. "Miss Me," Darius Rucker's fourth single from True Believers, is at country radio now. The album's previous hits are the title track, the #1 Grammy-winning multi-platinum "Wagon Wheel," and the Top 5 hit "Radio."
