Album Review: LiveWire - "Livin'"

With Livin', Joplin, Missouri's LiveWire has moved into the national mainstream with their full-length debut album released through Way Out West Records. Read on to see what we think of the six-piece band's 10 song collection here.

Lead-of track "Don't Nothin' Take My Breath" showcases lead vocalist Andy Eutsler's ability to sing a song with a little attitude, a song which also features strong harmonies from rhythm guitarist Danny Bell. The track, which was written by country star Chris Young and hit songwriters Johnny Bulfurd ("A Woman Like You") and Jay Brunswick, is fun and feels like a strong future radio single contender. "Don't Make Me Love You" also comes from the pen of Bulford (who also co-wrote "Better") and it finds LiveWire once again showcasing a unique modern country sound that also feels timeless. The band's approach is perhaps best showcased on lead single "Lies," written solely by Andy Eutsler. The melody is jovial but finds Andy singing lyric that finds his ex telling mutual friends lies about how the relationship came to end. He simply pleads with her to tell the truth about what happens.  It's a heart-felt uptempo break-up song.

Y'know, for as good as the outside material is, it is the band's own songs that suit what they do the best. The album's title track "Livin'" finds them singing about living life as a young person, without a care in the world ("We were loving the days of vein' 18 and livin'"). Later the song talks about a young family and later a family who made it through the day to day grind to feel 18 again. Danny Bell wrote "History" and it's a fantastic Haggard-style weeper about a guy who wants to fix things of a relationship on the ropes. The lyrics are original and not just same-ol, same-ol Nashville stuff.

"What Makes You A Man" and "Gone" were both on The EP (in slightly different incarnations) and it was wise to repeate these two songs here as well. The songs are both written by Bell and they both showcase - again - strong storytelling and great, tight musicianship (with lead guitarist, Bobby Degonia, bass player Landon Rolfe, fiddler Cory Shultz and drummer Adam Hagerman rounding out the band with Vocalist Andy Eutsler and Rhythm Guitarist/Harmony vocalist Danny Bell). Livin' is the band's debut with Way Out West Records and one of the year's better, most-complete albums.
