Josh Kelley - "Gone Like That"

With "Georgia Clay" announcing the arrival of Josh Kelley, he's looking to take a step further with his follow-up single "Gone Like That" Read on to find out what our writer Kyle Ward has to say about the chances for this single to succeed.

What’s really on display here are Kelley’s vocals.  He weaves through the material with emotion, restraint, and even a touch of tenderness.  He may not have the out and out vocal chops that his brother Charles has, but he certainly knows how to interpret a lyric.  Speaking of the lyrics, the song is an effective telling of a man’s emotional gamut upon running into an ex that left him.  The first verse is particularly strong, as he goes back and forth on how he feels about seeing her again, building to the chorus when he realizes he still loves her, but can’t risk another broken heart, another “gone like that.”  As is becoming contagious in Nashville these days, the second verse adds very little to the song, throwing around a few similes but not really advancing the thoughts or story already presented.  Production wise there isn’t much to report, it’s pleasant modern contemporary mid-tempo country.  It allows Kelley to emote his vocals without forcing him to sing over a wall of sound, and the melody is strong and makes the chorus an easy sing-along.  If Josh Kelley is going to launch a successful country career, this song has a much better chance at being the launching pad.
