Colt Ford - "Chicken & Biscuits"

Colt Ford has tore-up the usual maisntream playbook in getting on the charts without much support from folks in Nashville. With buzz in the industry thanks to grassroots success, can Colt get this song, which feels like his first real shot aimed at radio, up the charts?

Country and rap are apparently the most polarizing genres in the world. Think of how many times you've heard someone say "I like every kind of music except country and rap." But put those two together and there's no doubt — you've made the ultimate "love it or hate it" music. Just ask Cowboy Troy, Bubba Sparxxx, Kid Rock... or Colt Ford.

Ford's fourth official single release, "Chicken and Biscuits," is a bit more country-sounding than his genre-bending contemporaries. The production isn't aggressive, but rather laid-back and nearly acoustic. Ford's voice is emphatic and playful at the same time, and even though he's reciting more than singing, Ford (convincingly) projects an attitude not all that far-removed from Southern rock.

Lyrically, it doesn't really touch on anything that you haven't heard before — he's got a hot woman who cooks, sings in church, and goes skinny-dipping — but it all ties into a rather clever hook of "I can't get enough, kinda like chicken and biscuits." As someone who regularly eats KFC, I know exactly where he's coming from there.

Colt Ford clearly has the audience for his unusual brand of music. Even on his own label, he has managed a non-trivial amount of sales, and he's hit the charts three times. Radio may or may not ever warm up to him, but either way, "Chicken and Biscuits" should tickle a few eardrums and please a lot of fans. Who knows; it might even bring in a few more.
