The Best Singles of 2009: Darryl Worley - Sounds Like Life To Me (#38)

Throughout the course of his career Darryl Worley has scored multiple hits and while he's bounced around from label to label in recent years, that hasn't stopped the artist from delivering one of the best country radio singles of 2009.

Right now, in the world, there are people suffering worse than we are in America.  Even as we lose our jobs and struggle to make ends meet, there are people worse off than us and that’s basically what “Sounds Like Life To Me” talks about.  While the plainspoken Dr. Phil-like advice which Darryl Worley dispenses to his buddy is not gonna hit everyone the same but it’s a wisdom that is worthy of hearing nonetheless.  As human beings we tend to live and die by what is happening in our own private movies that are our own lives.  We forget that life spills out the way it does to help make us stronger people.  So when we get a woe-is-me attitude about everything, we should hope that we have a friend as good as the one Darryl is showcasing on “Sounds like Life To Me.”

Even if the lyrics tell a story of an alcoholic who has fallen off the wagon (and Darryl later encourages this by buying the bar a round to celebrate life), the song’s greater message is what helped make this song grow on us at Roughstock this past year.  It’s not a perfect song but in the end that message is what makes the song our 38th favorite single of 2009.

This single is part of our month-long countdown of Country Music's best singles of 2009.  Check back daily to see how the countdown shakes out.

The single is the title track to Darryl's first album for Stroudavarious Records.  Click here to read Michael Sudhalter's review of the album.
