Much like the CMA Awards last week, the AMA Awards are likely to play-out in a very predictable manner. That means that Taylor Swift is likely to win most of the categories that she's nominated for. The American Music Awards, which are a more mainstreamed version of the Grammy Awards, usually give awards for popularity rather than pure artistry but when an artist manages to meld both together, they're bound to find themselves at the award podium.
The awards that Swift is all but guaranteed to win are the Favorite Female Country Artist, Favorite Country Album and Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist. She's just not going to lose those awards. She's also likely to win the Favorite Female Pop/Rock artist and might just find Kanye West ready to say that she stole another award from Beyonce if she does indeed win that. She's also likely to win the Favorite Pop/Rock Album award over Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson unless the AMA's give Jackson the Grammy-like posthumous love for his Number Ones album. I still don't see how a best-of CD can be an 'album of the year' and more than likely, Jackson will beat out Eminem and T.I. for Favorite Male Artist and be the stiffest competition with Taylor Swift for Artist of the Year (all genres). In the end, I think MJ will take that award for the reasons I just mentioned.
I think that the Favorite Country Male Artist category between Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker and Keith Urban is a total toss-up. All three have had great years and totally deserve to win the award. In the end though, I think Rucker or Urban will win based on name recognition. Since this is a prediction article, I'll go with Rucker. Like the Male Artist category, the Favorite Country Duo or Group category is loaded with popular previous winner Rascal Flatts and risers like Sugarland and Zac Brown Band. I think this year with Sugarland's increased profile that they're the likely winners with the ZBB likely the runner-up. Taylor is up against Carrie Underwood and Reba for the female category but I just don't see how she doesn't see the love here.
Gloriana is up against Keri Hilson, Lady Gaga and rapper Kid Cudi for the Emerging Artist of the Year award and I think it's pretty safe to say that neither Kid Cudi nor Keri Hilson have enough fans to topple Lady Gaga or Gloriana. In the end, while I really like Gloriana, I just don't see how this fan-voted award will become theirs unless Lady Gaga's loyal fan base doesn't vote nearly as much as Gloriana's do. In all honesty, they share some of the same fans which is enough to find Gloriana the runner-up for this award.
The show, which starts with a 9 minute tribute to Michael Jackson by his sister Janet will be an interesting one and I'll be sure to keep you up to date on the happenings next Monday.
