After the quick rise and stall of the Chad Kroeger-penned “It’s A Business Doing Pleasure With You,” Tim McGraw is quickly coming to radio with the second single –out a likely six or seven given Curb’s recent history with Tim– from the new album Southern Voice. This new single is the album’s title track and like “Last Dollar (Fly Away)” the song has a catchy chorus that is like an earworm in that doesn’t want to leave your consiousness.
Although the catchiness of the chorus ultimately saves “Southern Voice” (listen here) from being a complete throwaway, one can’t help but think of the song as but another laundry list of things that quantify why something is or isn’t great. In this case, the song uses a cavalcade of well-known names and attitudes to drive home just what that southern voice is. Usually, I am very amenable to lyrics of this sort and I’ve even grown fond of many hit songs that seem either silly or disjointed but I don’t know if I’ll be able to come to grips with exactly what this song is trying to get across except to say that all these people listed somehow showcase the southern spirit and ‘voice.’
In the end, if anything is going to save “Southern Voice” from the scrap-heap, it will be Tim McGraw’s engaging vocal, the punchy and southern rock-inflicted melody along with that earworm of a chorus. Normally that’s enough to make me happy yet somehow, I don’t feel as if this is the best thing off of McGraw’s upcoming album. At least I certainly hope it isn’t. He can do so much better.
