ACM Award Recap

Carrie Underwood lead the pack at Sunday night's ACM Awards as the former American Idol winner continues to rack up the Country music industry awards for her stellar vocal and now entertainer skills. A couple of other categories featured record breaking wins, who were they?

For the first time since 2000, a female artist is the winner of the Academy of County Music's (ACM's) "Entertainer of the Year" trophy.  The last female act to win the top prize from the trade group was the Dixie Chicks.  In addition to winning that fan-voted award, Underwood took home, for the third year in a row, the Top Female Vocalist award while Brad Paisley took home the Top Male Vocalist award.  For the first time in 15 years, the Top Duo award went to somebody not named Brooks & Dunn as Sugarland finally took the award home.  Rascal Flatts took home the other major vocalist award as the trio took their seventh straight Top Vocal Group award, breaking the record they held with 80s supergroup Alabama.

In the other categories, Julianne Hough beat out Zac Brown Band and Jake Owen for the new "Top New Artist" award that was voted on, just like the Entertainer award.  All three artists are actually still winners, though due to them each still getting an ACM award for their respective Female, Group and Male mnew artist categories.  Jamey Johnson, Lee Thomas Miller and James Otto were presented with ACM "Song Of The Year" for writing Jamey's Top 15 hit "In Color" while Trace Adkins, who performed "Til The Last Shot's Fired" on the show with the West Point Choir, took home the award for Single of the Year.  This is only Trace's 2nd ACM Award and it's his first in over a decade.  Taylor Swift took home "Album Of The Year" for her triple platinum disc "Fearless" (click to read review).  The Academy also presented Swift with one of two new, "Crystal" awards for her sales acheivement.  Jennifer Nettles received the other one in recognition of being the first female to win a songwriting ACM in 2008.  So, in effect, the ACM's gave Jennifer two awards for writing "Stay." LeAnn Rimes took home the other televised award of the night for her humanitarian efforts.
