The year has almost ended so over the course of the last month or so of the year Roughstock will celebrate some of the year’s best singles. Chosen by our editorial staff, these songs rank as our favorite singles of the year. Here's our 32nd best single of the year, "Love Is A Beautiful Thing" from Phil Vassar.
Phil Vassar has built a career upon his own songwriting but this year saw the artist score a Top 10 hit with the decade old Jeffrey Steele and Craig Wiseman co-write. Originally a minor hit eight years ago for Canadian superstar Paul Brandt, the lyrics of the song describe how a joyous occasion like a marriage can bring families together, even after they haven't talked for months on end. The melody is driven by banjos, steel guitar and guitar with some of Vassar's signature piano playing in the mix as well. While he's occasionally gotten same-song-y with his own compositions, Phil has managed to just sing this song and while it partially sounds like one of his songs, "Love Is A Beautiful Thing" also manages to stand out enough to make it one of his best singles and one of 2008's best.
