(NASHVILLE, 26 DEC 00) -- The Roughstock Network (http://www.roughstock.com/) announced their 2000 Single and Album of the Year awards today, the sixth year that Roughstock has conducted the fan-voted country music awards. Lee Ann Womack capped a breakout year by earning the Single of the Year award. Womack's "I Hope You Dance" captured the top spot on the Countdown for six weeks this past summer. With two singles in the year-end chart and a third climbing the regular weekly charts, Lonestar earned Album of the Year honors for "Lonely Grill". The award marked the 2nd time "Lonely Grill" has been recognized. Lonestar's 1999 Single of the Year, Amazed, came from the same album. Phil Vassar easily topped a host of newcomers for the Best New Artist award for 2000. Chris Lindsey was named Songwriter of the Year.
The Single and Album of the Year awards are compiled from the results of the weekly Roughstock Country Countdown (http://www.roughstock.com/roughstock/rcc.html) chart. The RCC Chart is the largest fan-voted country music chart, with over 120,000 votes tabulated each week. Along with the announcement, Roughstock released their 2000 Year-End Singles, Albums, and Country Record Label charts and honored their Best New Artist and Songwriter of the Year for 2000.
Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" spent 6 weeks at number 1 and 26 weeks on the Roughstock Country Countdown. Womack's six-week stint at the top was the second longest streak in Countdown history. Lonestar's "Amazed" spent 8 weeks at the top in 1999.
After earning Single of the Year honors last year, Lonestar returned to place "What About Now" at number 2. Lonestar's "Smile" also appeared at number 29 to help wrap up the Album award. Phil Vassar was the runaway winner for Best New Artist. Vassar placed his first two singles in the year-end chart and had the number six album of the year. Vassar outpaced Keith Urban and Darryl Worley and a handful of other new acts.
MCA Nashville continued its dominance of the Label of the Year Award, despite good showings by Arista, Warner Brothers/WEA, and Curb. On the strength of Lee Ann Womack's Single of the Year, and releases from George Strait, Vince Gill, Reba, and Chely Wright, MCA charted 6 singles and 4 albums in earning their fourth straight Label of the Year Award. MCA also won Label of the Year in 1995. Successful years by headliners SHeDAISY, Rascal Flatts and Aaron Tippin earned an impressive 6th place showing for new label Lyric Street.
Roughstock also awarded Songwriter of the Year for the second time. On the strength of Keith Urban's "Your Everything" at number 11, Chris Lindsey squeaked past songwriting partner Aimee Mayo to take the award. Mayo, Bill Luther, Toby Keith, and Marv Green all made good showings on the year-end chart. Mayo and Luther co-wrote three singles each. Green and Keith helped pen two. In earning the Songwriter award, Lindsey co-wrote three singles: Smile from Lonestar (with Keith Follese), Your Everything from Keith Urban (with Bob Regan), and Let's Make Love from Faith Hill and Tim McGraw (with Aimee Mayo, Bill Luther, and Marv Green). Lindsey also collaborated with Mayo and Green on 1999's Single of the Year, "Amazed" by Lonestar.
Over 7 million votes were tabulated by the Roughstock Country Countdown during the 49 chart weeks in 2000. The oldest country and western site on the Web, founded in August 1993, Roughstock has presented the weekly Roughstock Country Countdown in its current format since 1995.
