Zac Brown Band And Friends - Pass The Jar
By: Matt Bjorke
In just about two years the Zac Brown Band has gone from little-known Georgia band to a household name thanks to a combination of their string of #1 hits (they’re working on their fifth in a row), the double platinum The Foundation album and epic and legendary concerts that helped the band get nominated for the ACM Entertainer of the Year award. To give fans who’ve never gotten a taste of the Zac Brown Band’s live show a true sense of how entertaining and fun the whole event is, the Zac Brown Band presents their first concert DVD (2 live CDs too). Recorded at the Fox Theater in Atlanta as a benefit for the recently burned-down Georgia Theater in Athens, Georgia, Pass The Jar features all of the hits that fans have come to expect from the Zac Brown Band along with some great interview pieces with the band intermixed with the performances.
The show also features some great guests including many folks from Georgia. Singer/songwriter Angie Aparo (he wrote “Cry” and recorded it before Faith Hill), singer/songwriter Aslyn and Kid Rock all guest on various tracks with Aslyn singing “Trying To Drive” while Angie sings “Junkyard.” Kid Rock guests on the southern rock classic “Can’t You See.” Country duo Joey + Rory guest on “Free/Into The Mystic” while Little Big Town are featured on “Colder Weather.” These guests help liven up the concert performance and the band itself shows its virtuosity on multiple songs, including “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” (made famous at 2009’s CMA), “America The Beautiful” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” This is a fully-formed band and not just people who back up Zac Brown.
The bonus part of the DVD and CDs include Joey + Rory’s “Cheater, Cheater” and artists signed to Southern Ground Records. Levi Lowrey sings “All American,” Sonia Leigh sings “My Name is Money” wihle Nic Cowan sings “Money Don’t Make You Happy.” Pass The Jar: Zac Brown Band And Friends is one of the better live albums you’re likely to hear in 2010 and the video portion of this 2 CD/DVD set is absolutely stunning with great videography and editing which raises the whole package up from ‘just’ being a concert film. If you have wanted to see the Zac Brown Band up close and personal but haven’t been able to yet, this is a great way to see how a band working on its first album got nominated for an Entertainer of the Year ACM Award. It was well earned.
