The holder of 27 Top 10 hits, eight Number One hits, and nearly 10 million albums sold, Tracy Lawrence certainly has a career anyone would love to have. While it’s been a successful ride, Tracy also has had major peaks and valleys and has certainly lived an eventful, sometimes newsworthy for the wrong reasons, life. Now free from the constraints of a major record label deal, Tracy has chosen to record “The Rock,” a collection of Christian themed country music that he’s always wanted to record.
Adam Wheeler and Mark Namore’s “Somebody Who’d Die For You” is a touching song that showcases the strength of people who are willing to die for who they love and what they believe in, be it their country or their God. It’s a story that we all can relate to, no matter what faith you are affiliated with. Wild in his earlier days, Tracy Lawrence no doubt can really relate to Allen Shamblin and Steve Seskin’s “I’m Done,” a song about wanting to be a better person and willing to change and move on from past transgressions:
“I’m done harbouring grudges and nursing old wounds,
Ddone clinging to old crutches and singin’ the blues,
I’m done pointing fingers to everyone else, I
’m taking a long hard look at myself,
A new day has begun, I’m done”
This is the kind of song that radio really embraces and hopefully when it’s released to radio, it will join those other hits mentioned above. “Dear Lord” is the lone track on this 10 song collection to be written by Tracy (with old friend Flip Anderson). With a familiar melody that is a staple of many classic hits from artists like George Strait, “Dear Lord” too sounds like a hit. Yes, it is spiritual in theme but that doesn’t mean it’s not also a great piece of laid-back country music. Dave Berg, Annie Tate and Sam Tate are the co-writers of the Emerson Drive hit “Moments” and they are also the co-writers of “I Know Where Heaven Is,” a mid-tempo ode to understanding that heaven may just be with those that we love and the moments that we enjoy the most.
“Up To Him,” the lead single from the album, was written by David Kent and Tim Johnson and while it’s struggling to find a large radio audience at the release of “The Rock,” the song is worthy of any spins it gets. The lyric finds Tracy in the person of a hard-working man who “hopes for the best, plans for the worst and works like it’s all up to me and pray that it’s all up to him.” It’s the kind of song that’s ripe for our times but that may just be why the song is struggling at radio. The beauty about “The Rock,” lies in the simple truths of the lyrics and melodies of the 10 tracks featured on it. While it is a Christian album, someone who’s not overtly religious could still find much enjoyment in the universal themes that are presented on the album and that’s what truly makes this one of 2009’s best releases so far.

it's nothing less of BRILLIANT. tracy knows what to record and when to record it, and he is a master of the music business as well. it definitely compares favorably to his body of work, and i wouldn't expect anything less from him.

Ok, here goes. How do you explain Tracy Lawrence’s new CD “The Rock” that’s due to be released in June. It is nothing like anything he has done in the past, but yet, it is just like what you would expect from him. Heartfelt, emotional, direct, caring and truthful. Tracy puts his whole heart and soul literally on the line with the “Rock.” Is it gospel, is it country, maybe country gospel. It is none of the above. It is Tracy Lawrence baring his soul for everyone to look at and see him for who he really is, ” A Man” who is not perfect and who has made mistakes as we all have and he finds a way to get back to who he really is and back to his beliefs. Tracy’s powerful, overview of spiritual music has taken him to new heights and will bring his fans and those fans of country music to a new place, a place to look at themselves and think about where they are and where they want to be. Whether your Christian, Protestant, Buddhist or what ever, it does not matter, this album is phenomenal and unprecidented. Especially now with the economy as it is and people losing their jobs as well as their homes, the “Rock” will give them something to grab onto and believe in themselves and in god, that things will change as did Tracy. Tracy changed alot of different things in his life over the years to be able to believe in himself to do this album. The “Rock” is a journey through life. Whether it be Tracy or “Somebody Who Would Die For You”. We all at sometime in our life will mentally write a letter to god asking him “Dear Lord” please grant me whatever, or help me, or make me understand why. Think about “Every Prayer” you ever said to god and why you were praying to him. We all at sometime get to a point where we say ok enough is enough “I’m Done” i am not doing this anymore or how ever you may say it. It all comes back to “The Book You Never Read” and why you did not take the time to read it, and now your looking for a piece of something to hold you steadfast and to give you the strength like “The Rock”. We all have our own place to go when times get tough like they are now, “I Know Where Heaven Is” and its wherever we find solace and comfort and helps us through our times of hardship and trials of life and we “Say A Prayer” and “Look Up To Him” to give us the strength to go on. “Jesus Come Talk To Your Chidren” and help them understand that your love is unconditional and has no racial, sexual or ethnic boundries and let them know that you are always there even though it may not seem that you are. The Rock is an unbelievabke album and Tracy Lawrence should be proud of what he has accomplished with it. This album is going to touch not only his fans, but alot of other people that hear it even if they are not country music fans. Everyone could learn from this album all they have to do is listen. It is a lesson in life and how to make the best of it. Let us all be thankful for each other and always remember the important things in life and remember to not only tell people that you love them, show them. Sometims saying it just isn’t enough. Let me leave you with this, “Peace Truly does come from within. The way we react to life may be the only control we have over it. So remember pick your battles and remember to enjoy life because it is very short.

I grabbed this from Emusic, because I'm a completest who has Lawrence's other albums. While this album isn't bad, I definitely would not categorize it as even one of the better releases of 2009 so far. I miss his early music.
