In case you didn’t know, the digital revolution is seriously upon us and Taylor Swift is the best-selling digital artist of all time. So it makes perfect sense for my first experience using the digital service ScatterTunes to come via her Target-exclusive deluxe edition.  Just like the CD version purchased in stores, the ScatterTunes edition includes everything on the CD, from the Target Red Speak Now cover & lyrics to the regular CD content (click here to read our review of the standard edition) to the bonus audio tracks and the videos, it’s is there.  In addition to the standard CD content, all of the photos under the lyrics are included as well as some other previously un-available content. 

The new songs on the Speak Now (Target Exclusive) begin with “Ours,” an outright love song that would probably have felt a little outta place on the regular Speak Now album and to be honest feels more like something from the Fearless album.  That sentiment can’t be said about “If This Was A Movie,” a song that really does glide by the ears as easily as Speak Now’s tracks do with cascading pop-based melodies enhancing Taylor’s diary-like lyrics.  “Superman” is a sweet song about her finding a guy who seems to be everything she wants out of a guy, even if he may not be ‘right’ for her.  The album also includes the “UK pop mix” of “Mine” along with acoustic versions of “Back to Decemeber” and “Haunted.”  As a fan of acoustic songs, it’s interesting to hear these songs as they still include the strings but an orchestra is still acoustic and the guitar is acoustic of course.   

The software from ScatterTunes, called the iBoard, is easier-to-use and designed better than the easy-to-use and well-designed iTunes software.  The way the package for Speak Now (Target Exclusive) ­“V-Album” is presented in ScatterTunes, it’s a rich experience that, while different than sitting and enjoying the CD booklet and physical CD edition, it’s as close to the CD experience as I’ve ever had with a digital product and quite simply, it leaves the iTunes digital liner note PDF and iTunes LP experiences in the digital dust.  ScatterTunes is onto something with this rich user experience.  The iBoard software is a product that helps to bring the non-musical creative element of an album, a feeling that many artists felt had been fading away with digital releases, back.  And that’s something that could help bring the virtual album (or V-Album) format back to folks looking for more than buying the singles they hear on the radio.
