Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles - The Stars Are Out

Modern Country music comes in all shades and colors and a perfect example of the broad appeal of the genre is the group Sara Borges and the Broken Singles.  Mixing five original tracks with five cover songs, Sara and guitarist Lyle Brewer, drummer Rob Dulaney and bassist Binky make up the band and they manage to cover sounds and styles that range from Buddy Holly and Orbison-like 50s rock to 80s indie rock to inspired alt-country tunes on “The Stars Are Out,” Borges third album and second with this steady band.

The album literally kicks-off with the Borges original “Do It For Free,” a song that wouldn’t be outta place on an old-school Joan Jett or Pat Benatar record while the band’s cover of Smokey Robinson’s is an inspired country-rocker that proves what a great songwriter Mr. Robinson was and continues to be.  NRBQ’s “It Comes To Me Naturally” shows up towards the end of the record and it, like a cover of Evan Dando’s “Ride With Me” shows that Borges likes a diverse array of artists.

The original songs like “Better At The End of the Day,” “I’ll Show You How” and “Symphony” show-off a songwriter who has the capability to find herself in the ranks of artists like Lucinda Williams and the previously mentioned Jett and Benatar.  While Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles’ “The Stars Are Out” won’t appeal to everyone, it certainly is a record written and performed by a very capable band with a bright future.

I love these guys. I got to hang out with them and they're really nice people. Fun band to see live, and I hope that they get more popular cuz they deserve it.
