It seems nobody’s ever told Rascal Flatts that the recording industry is in a state of turmoil. In a decade that has seen album sales drop significantly each year, the Nashville trio released five studio albums and sold over 16 million units in 8 years. Many of their #1 hits, including 'These Days,' 'Bless the Broken Road' and 'What Hurts the Most' are found on this retrospective. While none of their current hits from 2007’s “Still Feels Good” are included, the set captures what singer Gary LeVox, bassist Jay DeMarcus and guitarist Joe Don Rooney are best known for: pop-country that features rock influences and adult-contemporary instrumentation.DeMarcus and Rooney’s tight playing finely support LeVox’s vocal soprano, moving easily between soft verse and a more dramatic chorus. In fact, the trio’s ease and smooth flow while transitioning between loud and soft on songs like 'Feels Like Today' are one of the highlights of this compilation.

The set occasionally gets locked into featuring a bit too much of this format, and the collection’s later tracks like 'My Wish' seem like filler. Yet, the strength of the song selection illustrates what has made Rascal Flatts so successful, especially through the midway point where tracks like 'Fast Cars and Freedom' and 'Skin (Sarabeth)' show the group’s range and Rooney’s soaring lead guitar. The first printing of this greatest hits album includes three new tracks, all of which are Christmas songs just in time for holiday shoppers. Interestingly though, these three songs are the closest the crossover group ever gets to traditional country on this album.
