Lorrie Morgan - A Moment In Time

The daughter of country music royalty, Lorrie Morgan has certainly had a long and vibrant career.  While her alto voice was perfect for many of the hits she had in the 1990s, never has she sounded better than she does on A Moment In Time, a collection of her favorite songs from years gone by.  And while there have been a plethora of these kinds of releases over the past few years, very few have sparkled the way that “A Moment in Time” does.  It’s recorded strictly in the old school way of recording with orchestras, crackling Floyd Cramer-like piano fills, spirited guitar performances and just an all-around beautifully recorded album . The album, which Lorrie recorded in two days in the studio with all of the band present, features no overdubs and no studio trickery.  What you hear is what they recorded to tape on those two tracking days.

Where Wynonna Judd’s 2009 release was similar and featured a couple of the same songs, Lorrie Morgan was really, really, really born to sing these kinds of songs.   She even recorded an album like this before with the 1998 release Secret Love but that album cannot even compare to this one.  In fact, there are few albums that can compare to A Moment In Time. From Webb Pierce’s classic “Wine Me Up” to Lou Hangleman’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” to Jimmy Webb’s “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” the album just sparkles.  Reba once recorded “Phoenix” on her own “classics album” and that song doesn’t even hold a candle to Lorrie’s reading of the song made famous by Glen Campbell.   Lorrie has captured the essence of each of these songs and two of them are duets, “After The Fire Is Gone” with Tracy Lawrence and “Easy Lovin’” with Raul Malo.  Both duets show off how Lorrie Morgan is able to blend her voice with just about anybody but when paired with talented vocalists like Lawrence and Malo both songs feel like essential recordings.

Each and every song on A Moment In Time is crafted to show off the songs and Lorrie’s incredible voice, it’s the kind of album that all artists should strive to record and proves that studio trickery can sometimes get in the way of a great singer.  A Moment In Time is an exquisite recording that should be the bench mark for any and all future ‘Great American Songbook’ recordings, no matter the genre.

Lorrie is perfect, always. Taylor Swift should listen to this CD and she would realize she's got a lot to learn and that is country music!
