Album Review: Lauren Alaina - "Sitting Pretty On Top Of The World"

"Sitting Pretty On Top Of The World" takes Lauren Alaina’s art up a level.

Lauren Alaina may never be called one of contemporary country music’s new traditionalists but don’t let that lead you to believe she’s not creating quality music. Her Sitting Pretty On Top Of The World features strong songwriting throughout its fifteen tracks. Alaina contributed to writing 14 of its 15 songs, and also had help from top tier writers, like Lori McKenna and Hillary Lindsey. Alaina has a fine voice, of course, which sounds even better when applied to quality songs like these.

Just try not to love a song like “You Ain’t A Cowboy,” which is part twang, part soul music. You don’t want to be the faux-cowboy described in this song. If it describes you, you’d better go back and study those George Strait-like moves then come back and try again.

The album also includes a few high provide duets. One is (the lead single hit) “Getting Over Him,” a pairing with Jon Pardi. It has a Miranda Lambert-like revengeful tone whenever Alaina is singing her lines. “What Do You Think Of?” is Alaina’s duet with worldwide pop/rock star Lukas Graham. It’s a soulful piano ballad that will make you think twice bout what your ex’s may be thinking about you.

Lauren Alaina is not yet at the top of the country female vocalist heap – that rarified air only breathed by those with last names like Lambert and Underwood and Pearce. Sitting Pretty On Top Of The World takes Alaina’s art up a level, however. We now need to take this girl a lot more seriously.
