EP Review: Chandler Stephens - “This Is My Life”

Talented newcomer showcases why she’s one to watch with the “This Is My Life” EP.

It seems that the pendulum for classic songwriting in songs is making its way back towards traditional and roots of country music and Chandler Stephens is a perfect example of such an artist. The title track “This Is My Life” showcases why Stephens has the goods for future stardom with an easy charm about how she’s in love with a guy who others don’t get. It’s easy to see that Chandler Stephens has paid attention to the nuance and vocal tics of some greats like Tammy Wynette and Martina McBride on “Heartbreak Hall of Fame” while “Can’t Stop Love” has a classic ballad feel and is notable in that it’s a duet with RCA’s Kane Brown in one of the best vocals I’ve heard from him yet. Together it feels like an update on those Lori Morgan/Keith Whitley kind of songs I used to love to hear on the radio.

“If That’s Your Way,” “Gold” and “Patchwork Heart” are the other songs that make up this EP with the first one being a slight 90s throwback with a fun sing-a-long melody while the second one blends classic and contemporary sounds nicely with a playful vocal while the third and final one (and final track on the EP, “Patchwork Heart” brings us back to classic, introspective balladry that soothes the soul and tells a story.

With just six songs on This Is My Life, we get to know who Chandler Stephens is as an artist. With a strong vocal and tight songwriting, Chandler Stephens is definitely a developing artist to watch with a vocal and style that is unique in a genre that demands it.
