Danny Gokey - "Second Hand Heart"

With a couple hundred thousand albums sold and a pair of Top 32 singles, Danny Gokey is coming back with this song as the lead single to his upcoming sophomore album. Read on to find out what we think about the vocalist's new single.

With all of that taken into consideration, Danny Gokey and his label have taken time to come back with a new single to try and get him that real breakthrough with radio and to bring his message of faith, hope and love to as many people as possible. After one listen through of “Second Hand Heart,” perhaps the only issue fans are bound to have with the track is a combination of Danny’s soulful rasp of a voice and the melody of the song which is much more pop-leaning than some country fans are willing to reach for.  Still, for me, the song works.

Written by Cary Barlowe, Josh Kear, and Shane Stevens, “Second Hand Heart” is a song that is about a guy who finds the girl of his dreams and after finding that she’s been hurt and discarded by her last boyfriend, he lets on that he’s been ‘around the block a time or two’ but that his ‘second hand heart’ is there for her ‘second hand heart’ if she wants to accept it.  Perhaps a more uptempo re-write of “Bless The Broken Road,” “Second Hand Heart” has the sound of a song that can and should help re-establish Danny Gokey as a viable country radio star. A star who is ready to connect with modern country fans, like the boatload of fans that Lady Antebellum and the Band Perry have courted the past couple of years.
