Monty Lane Allen - Back In The High Life

If you were to tell me that an artist was going to cover an 1980's rock song, Steve Winwood's "Back In The High Life Again" wouldn't have even registered on my barometer. Yet that's what country newcomer Monty Lane Allen has done.  Is it any good?

If you were to tell me that an artist was going to cover an 1980's rock song, Steve Winwood's "Back In The High Life Again" wouldn't have even registered on my barometer.  But that's the exact song that newcomer Monty Lane Allen has chosen to release as a single to country radio.  With a voice that recalls Keith Urban, Monty sings the lyric about getting back on top.  The production is clean and features a prominent fiddle solo where Winwood had a guitar solo.  The melody is driven by a banjo.  I like the song and think it's a good effort, but given how much his voice sounds like Keith Urban, I can't help but wonder how it would sound if Keith Urban had recorded the song.

With that thought in my head, I have to figure that radio programmers and listeners might think the same exact thing.  Which, ultimately, is what will be the reason this song fails at radio.

Listen to it on his myspace page.
