Roy Payne - "The Ballad of Tom Crocker"

Back home in Trout River where I was born,
I used to follow this guy around all the time;
As well, he'd teach me how to get into trouble,
He used to build a lot of boats;
I guess he's built more boats than any one man
On the west coast of Newfoundland.

Tom Crocker he is a friend of mine,
He taught me how to smoke and look at pretty young girls' behinds;
Why when I was just a little lad,
I kinda thought that Tom Crocker was my dad.
There was nothin' that Tom Crocker couldn't or wouldn't do,
If you knew his good wife Phenie, she'd say the same things, too;

Some folks say that the devil was his guide,
But I say that the Lord was on his side.

And all along the West Coast of Newfoundland,
A thousand fishermen thank the Lord for the magic in his hands;
Man, could Tom Crocker build a boat,
Why, I bet that he could make a mountain float.

I'd love to see his face when he hears this,
I bet he'll curse and say,
"You know he was a rascal of a kid."
And he'll say to Phenie, "Old girl,
You know I taught that little devil all he knows."
Yes sir, Tom Crocker sure is a friend of mine.

And Lord, you know when he dies,
I'm gonna sit and cry;
But I know he'll live to be a real old goat,
Unless you need him, Lord,
To build you a boat.

And all along the West Coast of Newfoundland,
A thousand fisherman thank the Lord for the magic in his hands;
Man, could Tom Crocker build a boat,
Why, I bet that he could make a mountain float.

Yes sir, Tom Crocker sure is a friend of mine.
