G D G D
Well I work for the city in the town where I grew up.
G D A G
Some days I run a backhoe some days I run a dump.
G D G D
If I had other plans on my graduation day,
G D A G
Then several years ago I guess I hauled 'em all away.
A D
Yeah I hauled 'em all away.

D G D
She told me she was pregnant on the day I turned 18.
G D A G
I did what your supposed to do. I bought her a ring.
D G D
He didn't have to ask us, but he asked us anyway.
G D A G
We stood up and said, "I do." what else were we gonna say?
A D
What else were we gonna say?

A
Well I'm thankful for the things I have,
G
And all the things I don't.
A
And I've got dreams that will come true,
G
And I've got some that won't.
A G
Most the time I just walk the line wherever it goes.
D A G A D
'Cuz you can't hang yourself if you ain't got enough rope.

D G D
My boss man is the mayor. I do just what he asks.
G D A G
I mow the courthouse lawn, watch the prisoners walkin' past
D G D
I'm happy to be working, instead of wearin' chains.
G D A G
Like my cousin Willy, he's locked up in LaGrange.
A D
He's locked up in LaGrange.

A
But I'm thankful for the things I have,
G
And all the things I don't.
A
And I've got dreams that will come true,
G
And I've got some that won't.
A G
Most the time I just walk the line wherever it goes.
D A G A D
'Cuz you can't hang yourself if you ain't got enough rope.

D G D
There's a tavern down the highway, I go to drink some beers.
G D A G
And wash down all I'm missin' by hangin' around here.
D G D
Then I drive back to the trailer; I'll makeup with my wife.
G D A G
I kiss my sleeping children, and I get on with my life.
A D
Yeah I get on with my life.
