Emmylou Harris - "The Sweetest Gift"

THE SWEETEST GIFT
charted by Bo Frazer <[email protected]>
-------------------------------------------
This is a wonderful song originally by The Blue Sky Boys, I think,
made most famous by Linda Ronstadt & EmmyLou Harris, Judds, and
last (but best, imho) Hazel Dickens & Alice Girard. My wife and I
do it in our church every Mother's Day. In the chorus, there's an
echo thing happening, where the two vocal parts are not simultaneous.
-------------------------------------------
Verse1:
C
One day a mother came to a prison
G C
To see an erring but precious son.

She told the warden how much she loved him;
G C
It did not matter what he had done.

Chorus:
C
She did not bring a parole or pardon.
(bring to him) (pardon plea)
G C
She brought no silver no pomp or style.
(brought no gold) (none to see)
F
It was a halo sent down from heaven,
(halo bright) (heaven's light)
C G C
The sweetest gift, a mother's smile.

Verse2:
Her boy had wandered far from the fireside,
Though she had pleaded with him each night.
But not a word did she ever utter;
Her heart was flowing, her smile was bright.
[CHORUS]

Verse3:
She left a smile you can remember.
She's gone to heaven from heartache's grief.
Those walls around you will never change you;
You were her baby and e'er will be.
[CHORUS]
