With Thanksgiving finished and Christmas around the corner it makes sense for labels to push singles for radio airplay and Whitney Duncan’s version of this 1990’s Mariah Carey classic certainly is one of ‘em. The song wasn't changed too drastiacally from the original Carey version but given that it is a holiday tune, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" didn't need to be completely 'countrified' in order to gain airplay now and in the future. While it's rare for holiday songs to be an artist's true break-out hit, Whitney Duncan may have found herself one here. The production from Mark Bright and John Shanks is clean and crisp while Duncan's vocals truly shine. With the hit potential that Whitney has showcased on "When I Said I Would" and now here, there's no doubt in my mind that miss Duncan stands a great shot at being one of the brightest from country music's "Class of 2009."

Matt, we can't forget that Whitney has the "Nashville Star" curse upon her! Not only do the winners get ignored by country radio but the runners up find themselves banished! (OK, well maybe not.) Whitney will be doing a short set here in LA at The Mint on December 9th and I plan on seeing her because, er, umm, she's cute! (lol) It would be a miracle if this pop diva Christmas song broke Whitney on Top 40 country radio, but she sure picked the right kind of song to fit the format these days. Since Whitney was not a contestant on American Idol, nor Dancing With The Stars, nor is she a former pop-rock princess I think her chances are slim at AirHead Country Radio. They prefer new artists these days that already have an established fan base. Well, that's my take anyway....
