Trace Adkins - Muddy Water
By: Matt Bjorke
After a successful stint on "Celebrity Apprentice," Trace Adkins song "You're Gonna Miss This" helped to elevate his status within the country music community and the music world at large. That song ended up being a multiple-week number one hit for Trace while helping propel his "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" to Gold status. "Muddy Water" is the first single from Trace's upcoming album (set for a November release).
"Muddy Water" is a song about a man who decides to move to a new town to get a fresh start and to erase all of the bad stuff he's done throughout his life. The first step for him on that Sunday is to go to a church and get baptized. It's a way to cleanse his soul. Adkins has been known to sing the hell out of a gospel song and he does so here. "Muddy Water" is a satisfying debut single that could follow "You're gonna Miss This" up to the top of the charts. The only question I have for the song is whether it'll be remembered years from now or just be another 'radio hit' that disappears from memory.

I just listened to the song and found it to be "okay" but musically boring. The lyrics are deep enough to be interesting but not heavy enough to be compelling. Unlike most of Trace's recent singles it has neither a melodic or lyrical hook to reel you in and provide pleasure on repeated listens. I really don't think it will do well on radio apart from Trace's most dedicated fans giving it a push. If this is the best Trace can offer from his upcoming album, its time to head back to the drawing board.....
