Top 40 Singles of 2008: Heidi Newfield - "Johnny & June" (#11)

It’s not often that an artist can break free from a vocal group that is so closely associated with them but Heidi Newfield, the former lead singer of Trick Pony, did just that and more as she earned her first solo hit with this song, a tribute song to two of country’s legends, the late couple Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. The song was bound to catch on, especially with the Cash biopic “Walk the Line” still fresh in the public’s collective mind.

The duo would have been proud of Newfield’s song, which is a tribute to their passion of their romance.  “What Am I Waiting For,” her debut as a solo artist, was a success and coupled with this fantastic breakthrough single, fans should expect to hear lots more from her in the future.

I tend to like smokey voiced female singers from Tanya Tucker, to Lacy J. Dalton, to Jann Browne, to Amber Dotson and Sarah Buxton but Heidi's voice just doesn't do it for me. Maybe its her association with Trick Pony or the rockin' nature of this song, but either way Heidi leaves me feeling completely apathetic. Heidi is just too much of a manufactured mainstream Nashville product for my quirky tastes. She does score brownie points for having a nice bosom though! (lol)
