Lady Antebellum continued its successful year by following up its first number one hit, “I Run to You” with “Need You Now.” The song, which comes off of the group’s sophomore album, which has yet to be released, goes through the ups and downs of a relationship and pits the smooth vocals of Hillary Scott which are answered by the equally smooth vocals of band mate Charles Kelley.

As Scott and Kelley go through the song and sing back and forth about needing each other as the night drags on, instrumentalist Dave Haywood continues to drive the song by infusing piano and guitar into the background. Lady A managed to incorporate and showoff its great range of vocals and kept the overall tone of the song pretty mellow-- until the climax. Toward the end, all three band mates were in on the vocals and the back and forth singing from Scott to Kelley gives the song a duet feel. However, Haywood’s vocals, coupled with the electric guitar take the song to a new level both emotionally and musically.

“Need You Now” has officially been certified platinum and Lady Antebellum will continue to be one of country’s fastest rising groups once its second album is released on Jan. 26, 2010.

This is a very fine pop song and even though there is nothing remotely country about it, I still like it. Hillary Scott's voice has never sounded better and I expect a little digital studio trickery might have something to do with that. If mainstream country is going to continue to become more and more pop and rock music oriented, I hope its artists with this level of songwriting talent that lead the way.
