If there was ever a case of perserverence in country music, Steve Azar would be the subject. He first signed a record deal in 1995 and scored his only hits with Mercury Nashville in 2002. By 2006 he had signed with his third record deal before pulling that album and deciding to self-release it earlier this year. "You're My Life" is his latest single.

The first thing that appeals to the listener is the acoustic country-rock arrangement. Once listening to Steve sing the lyrics, which are about a guy who would do anything to be with his lovely bride, it's pretty evident that Radney Foster co-wrote the song with Azar. It just has the Radney Foster sound to it. Still, make no mistake, the song is very much a Steve Azar song in the way that Azar phrases certain parts and how there's a slight hit of the Delta blues in the track. There's just something cool about Azar that I've always dug and I was happy when his single "I Don't Have To Be Me ('Til Monday)" was a hit back in 2002. Country radio has a ton of cookie-cutter acts and it's time they started allowing interesting and cool acts like Azar into the fold and "You're My Life" is just the kind of song to do it.

This is a really pleasant, mellow song from Steve that is actually kind of soothing. Everything seems to be relaxed about this production and I really like the tasty acoustic guitar licks. The lyrics aren't deep, but the emotions are genuine and honest and that counts for a lot. Since I like this song that usually means Top 40 country radio will ignore it, and the lack of bombastic production and distorted Fender soild body electric guitars are a death knell in today's market. Steve hasn't had a Top 20 radio hit in awhile and mainstream country radio's focus these days on new artists (combined with their non-existent memory of anything less than superstar legacy artists) tends to cause artists like Steve to be quickly forgotten. A truly catchy song like Steve Holy's "Brand New Girlfriend" can sometimes regain access, but this quiet tune probably won't break through. In a radio environment that embraces loud thumping stuff like "Holler Back", Kid Rock's latest, and now "Back That Thing Up", a pleasant little song like this isn't likely to slot comfortably inbetween them on the craptastic airhead country playlist....
