Steve Azar - "Sunshine"
By: Bobby Peacock

Steve Azar's career, to say the least, has not been one of commercial success. Strangely, his long string of duds doesn't stem from lack of quality; indeed, there might have been a bit of a mainstream tinge on his long-forgotten Heartbreak Town back in 1996 or his 2002 effort Waitin' on Joe (whose title track is easily one of my favorite single releases of the 2000s), but even those showed a great deal of promise -- promise that didn't really come into full focus until his pair of albums on his own Dang label.
Earlier this year, the silly but engaging "Moo La Moo" brought Azar (barely) back into the 40. He tries the opposite tack this time around, going for a slow, gentle ballad. The lyrics are simple and effective, staying away from the possible clichés that they could easily have developed into -- while indeed, there are many, many songs in which the narrator says that his lover is the sunshine of his life, Azar's lyrics come across as heartfelt and sincere, not cloying. Also working in the song's favor is its production: acoustic guitar, a couple raspy harmonica solos, congas and of course, his slightly grained, laid-back delivery.
Will this song get Azar back on the charts? Who knows anymore -- there's obviously a certain degree of name-recognition, if the fact that he's still charting is any indication. "Sunshine" isn't exactly your typical radio fare, but then again, there's been no shortage of acts having success on indie labels, and no shortage of artists having dark-horse hits with stripped-down ballads just like this. This certainly deserves at least a little bit of chart action.

My neighbor and I had been simply debating this particular subject, he is usually seeking to show me incorrect. Your view on this is nice and exactly how I actually feel. I simply now mailed him this web page to show him your individual view. After looking over your website I guide marked and will probably be coming again to learn your new posts!

"You have a truly interesting blog. As well quite a few blogs that I see now do not really present something that I'm interested in, but I'm definately serious about this one. Just considered that I would pass that message on. "

Whoa, I just realized this song was being commented on in January??? It's now late June and here is Louisiana it is just getting airplay. As I said, I've heard it three times in four days in the mid-day, so I'm really hoping that's a good thing. If this slips back away...jeez.

The first time I heard this, I stayed in my car until it was finished. I thought it was gorgeous and unique. "Who is that?" I wondered. The second and third times, I also waited for the DJ to identify it. No such luck! It was starting to aggravate, so I looked it up on Google ("You're My Sunshine country song")and found your review doing it justice, thanks so much. This BEAUTIFUL song deserves to be a huge hit, I hope it goes to No. 1 and stays there for a month -- I trust the good airplay (all three of my listens were mid-afternoon) is a promising sign that radio is on board. Now all they have to do is say his name! Well done, Steve Azar. Thanks for a very special song, destined to become a classic.

I've been a lover of music since my mom and I would sing Elvis songs in the kitchen, and I have been to many concerts and Steve tops all I have seen or heard with his unique style, voice, stage presence. Truely a Real-Life expressing song writer, very rare these days. A must see in concert, keep letting that light shine Steve. God Bless you

I was actually a fan of him starting with Heartbreak Town. I have a vague recollection of hearing "Someday" and "I Never Stopped Loving You" on radio, and I liked both of those songs even then.

Steve Azar is a star. His music fits into all venues and given the air-time fans could discover just how UNIQUE his voice and music is. With his latest "SUNSHINE", I hope he earns all he has worked so diligently for. His music is his own style for all the universal music lovers. Check out steveazarlive.com
