Steel Magnolia - "Bulletproof"
By: Matt Bjorke
It is pretty amazing to me that Season two Can You Duet winners Steel Magnolia haven’t broken out the way that fellow duos Thompson Square (who were let go on the very same season) and Joey+Rory (season one contestants) have. They have dynamic voices and the power of one of the biggest and smartest labels in Nashville behind them.
Perhaps this lack of break-out success is directly tied to the fact that Steel Magnolia, the newly engaged duo of Meghan Linsey and Joshua Scott Jones’s debut album, was released nearly a year after Top 5 debut single “Keep On Lovin’ You” was released. The follow-up singles “Just By Being You” and “Last Night Again” simply didn’t strike a chord with radio as much as that lead single so to say that fourth single “Bulletproof” is a make or break song for the duo and their debut album is putting it mildly.
Written by Lori McKenna and Chris Thompkins, “Bulletproof” is a supremely strong song with engagingly powerful vocals from Meghan that find her navigating the simple joys of life after getting out of a horrible relationship. It’s a song that anyone getting out of a relationship and living with a new outlook on life (and the very good feeling about life as a single woman who can do what she wants, when she wants). The power in Meghan’s voice recalls Melissa Etheridge and at others there’s a hit of Trisha Yearwood in her nuanced vocal delivery.
If there’s anything that’s gonna make radio want to play Steel Magnolia over and over, it is going to be “Bulletproof.” Perhaps once this song is a big hit, the duo can close out the record with the fantastic “Edge of Goodbye” or maybe the fun cover of Keith Urban’s “Homespun Love.” Whatever happens, modern country music is for the better if they keep Steel Magnolia around.

I think that Steel Magnolia's record label has really let them down. These kids are pounding the pavement and really getting out there but it seems like they aren't getting the radio play time that they deserve. Every song on their cd is really fabulous.

I think that if radio would listen to "Bulletproof" from Steel Magnolia - they would LOVE it!! It's a powerful song!!!! It's got phenominal vocals on there - Meghan and Josh did a fantastic job on this and the whole album!! Bulletproof is one of those STRONG songs that has soo much meaning behind it all - if everyone would just listen!!! Please call in your local radio stations and request "Bulletproof" and help get this song to be a #1 for Steel Magnolia - they deserve it!!!!! :) I love these guys sooo much!! I also believe these guys work sooo hard and put on a PHENOMINAL show!! I just seen them live for the first time this last Sunday and am still amazed at their talent!!!! They are soooo talented!! Please help get this song to be a #1!! :) Sincerely, Jen

I agree with Sam, I am not sure where the writer, Matt B. is getting this info or what charts he is watching. I think he needs to re write his article with facts. Love Steel Magnolia and they have truly broken out.

I really dont see how Joey and rory have broken out just Becuase they get good reviewes didn't mean they have broken out I'm sure steal magnolia has o have sold as much as their debut album with cheater being their only real hit and it wasn't even that big honestly Thompson square is the only current duo to really be considerrex breakout stars that being said I don't think his song is as make or break as to think I'm rooting for this song to do well Becuase I like steal magnolia I would have rather they released glass houses I think that song is food enough to win a Grammy if released but I beleive they could take this song into top 20 and maybe another to 20 song unless glass houses is released an then another top 10 or even following Joey and rory a top 20 hit and another album release now the second single from the next record will be their actual make r break song
