It's always hard to follow-up a hugely successful song, let alone a breakthrough song like "Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not." And while Thompson Square was able to score a couple of more hits ("I Got You" and "Glass") from Thompson Square that showcased a versatile and talented vocal duo, they experienced diminishing returns with each single (#1 - #8 - #15) so to say that "If I Didn't Have You" had a hard hill to climb would be an understatement.

"If I Didn't Have You" has the distinction of not only being a song hoping to really follow-up "Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not," but also the choice of lead single for the husband and wife duo of Keifer and Shawna Thompson's sophomore album and to stop the tide of diminishing results. And while completely a power ballad, "If I Didn't Have You" should have no problem becoming a signature hit for Thompson Square.

The melody and production are modern in approach but once you hear Shawna Thompson lead vocal, it's not hard to know that this is both a country song and something that's not of the 'also-ran' category. It's a song about a woman who is unafraid to admit how much her husband means to her ("This life would kill me if I didn't have you"). It's a nice lyrically sweet way to say a theme that is often showcased in country music. Also, Keifer's raspy harmony vocals give the song just enough grit to enhance its likeability.

Well-written, strongly-performed and produced, "If I Didn't Have You" is a smart lead single choice for Thompson Square and one that should have the duo back up inside the Top 10 of the country radio charts and it has some potential to crossover to AC and Adult Contemporary radio charts too.
