Reba McEntire - "Strange"

Isn't it "Strange" to hear new music from Reba McEntire that sounds entirely contemporary and country at the same time?  With a lyric that finds Reba feeling a little bit weird about not 'home in the bed with the pillow cryin.'  Instead of being sad about the end of a relationship, Reba's taking the route that many people who realize the relationship they were in was a bad one feel, they feel damn good. "Ain't love strange" Reba sings and, well she and the song's writers, Wendell Mobley, Jason Sellers and Neil Thrasher are right. What love does to people is strange, even if it 'lucky' to 'wake up with the sun shining.'

There's no denying that this single is an absolute whopper of a hit single.  While anybody could've sung this song and made it a hit, Reba wraps her strong vocal around the song and doesn't let go.  She sounds renewed, refreshed and ready to conquer the charts once again, something that may indeed be very "Strange" to many young Country fans.

Well, this song is picking up a lot of adds and debuted higher on the singles charts than any of Reba's previous singles. It appears Top 40 country radio still loves Reba! I'm glad they do something right now and then...

I think it's a nice break from what she's been doing. "Because of You" (was already overplayed when it went country) and "Every Other Weekend" were both so slow and unappealing, I think this is what she needs to appeal in any way, shape, or form to any new fans who might not already be established Reba followers. I've also been told (although I wasn't aware of it) that the "ain't love strange" isn't emphasized well enough and the reference to "strange" is a fairly not-PC reference that I'm sure is unintended.

I'm really curious to see how this does on radio nowadays. Alan Jackson, George Strait, and Brooks & Dunn have maintained a steady chart presence over the years to keep career momentum while Reba has often been off doing other things. Reba's talent is undeniable and this is a fine song, but will that be enough for Top 40 country radio? Mainstream country stations are so enraptured with Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood these days that Reba may be "old news" both literally and figuratively . We'll see...
