Pat Green - "Country Star"

On his second single from 2009’s What I’m For, Pat Green lets loose with a fist-pumping, tongue-in-cheek country rocker poking fun at the idea of being a “Country Star.” Name-checking everyone from Carrie Underwood to Brooks n’ Dunn, and “breaking all the young girls hearts just like Keith Urban,” Green’s wit beautifully portrays the sometimes shallow dreams behind primetime television singing competitions like American Idol and Nashville Star.

Quick drums and a pop-tinged power chord intro quickly set the scene before Green sings “I gotta get my ass to Nashville,” and apparently all he needs is his guitar and a bus ticket before he’s “riding shotgun with Kenny, Faith and Tim.” However, the song’s true message lies in the all-encompassing irony that underscores everything from the production to the melody. Sounding like a Brad Paisely sing-along, Green manufactures the essence of today’s pop country with slick guitars and a hook-laden chorus that mirror the sentiments he’s poking fun at. Audiences can’t help but sing along, and in doing so, solidify Green’s statement – whether they know it or not.

Rather stinging comments from my predecessors! Ouch! I am actually a HUGE Pat Green fan. I think he's brillant and I love the new CD. I love his humor and you can clearly hear of it in this song. Thank goodness we have artists like Pat. He's such a breath of fresh air.! Thanks for being different, cause that is what makes you stand out!

I an soooo not a Pat Green fan. In fact I've realized I'm allergic to the Texas Regional Chart/Red Dirt artists in general. I'm glad for the artist's sake that somebody likes this stuff....
