Miranda, Lady Antebellum Big ACM Winners!

Predictability went out the window a little bit during the 45th ACM Awards Sunday night.  While wins for Brad Paisley for Male Vocalist and Brooks & Dunn were oh, so predictable, as was Lady Antebellum’s wins for Single, Song and Group of the year, the Best New Artist award didn’t go to who we expected it to go to and neither did the female vocalist and Album of the Year trophy.

Presented mostly like it was a three-hour infomercial for live country music than an actual, you know, award show, The ACM Awards awarded the Best New Artist award not to Gloriana or Joey + Rory but to Luke Bryan, who I would’ve guessed would’ve been the least-likely to win this award given how strong fans have been voting for Gloriana in the past and for Joey + Rory’s traditionalist leanings.   Still, as much as we like all the winners, it’s hard to argue with the results, particularly when you consider that Luke’s still sold more albums and had more hits than his category mates.  As for Female Vocalist of the Year, most people would’ve guessed that Taylor or Carrie would win this award but alas they didn’t as it went to the industry’s favorite of the moment, Miranda Lambert.  After working her way up to stardom the old-fashioned way, it’s refreshing to see her getting one of the most ‘coveted’ awards of the night.

Miranda also beat out Lady Antebellum and Carrie Underwood for Album of the Year with Revolution, giving her last two albums the achievement. This is something that’s also a record for a solo female artist (winning two Album of the Year awards).  Carrie, for her part, actually took home a record-making second Entertainer of the Year award herself, thanks in large part to the fans who voted for her throughout the show.  Many would’ve guessed that Taylor Swift would’ve taken home this award but I guess more Carrie fans were there to give her what they will spin as ‘the most important’ award of the night, but they can be proud of their star as she did win an award, even if she was shut-out of all the other awards but the special award she got for winning “the triple crown” award from the Academy.

Blake Shelton & Trace Adkins took home the Best Vocal Event for “Hillbilly Bone” before the show started while Miranda won Video of the Year for “White Liar,” giving her three awards for the evening.  Lady Antebellum won a total of five awards (each member got one as the artist and songwriter for the two “Need You Now” wins).  The best performances of the night include Miranda’s “The House That Built Me,” Keith Urban’s “I’m In,” Reba's "I Keep On Loving You" and Laura Bell Bundy’s fun “Giddy On Up” (something some other people will say was the worst). Carrie for her part was spot-on vocally while it was comical to see the mics off when Brooks and Dunn performed “My Maria.”  We also have to wonder if Kenny Chesney was singing or was lip-synching his performance.

In the end though, the show provided a great advertisement for mainstream country music and the sound at the show was pretty good, considering it was a live program and the fact that award shows are notorious for horrible sound.

i never mentioned taylor in the albums category. mirandas album may have been of high quality but american saturday night the foundation even the old lady antebellum album that are even higher quality. any one of these albums should have won this award not just becuase they sell more but becuase they dont border on puting me to sleep. i have insomnia and have fallen asleep to dead flowers and the house that built me on many ocassions. and as far as her relying on her vocal skills she really shouldsnt they arent good enought to do that unless its an upbeat song such as white liar whiich by all mean rely on them. i think she takes these slow songs a little to slow

Sam, you call Carrie poppy but you seem to ignore the fact that Taylor is just as poppy an artist. And the album of the year is not all about sales and chart positions, it is also about the quality, and Miranda's album is definitely of high quality. And just because Miranda does not run around the stage flipping her hair around and doing costume effects does not mean that she is not a good female singer. If anything, it means that she relies on her vocal talent to get her through the performance. She does not need gimmicks to distract us from dreadful vocals.

Exactly and to me there's more art on other albums. What about forever road from Darius rucker. I hope that's me from brad paisley. Dierks never released buetifull world but it was lazing as well as better believer and billy curingtons walk on. All these tracks have yet to be released to radio but they are way better quality in art compared to the house that built me in my opinion. And yea dead flowers hit 37 and it stoped there for a reason it was boring. Since people liked white liar so much maybe she should stick to the more edgeier songs. I'm just saying their are a ton more better quality albums out their. And the house that built me probably will win awards but I doubt it will hit 1 becuase it's the kind of song awards show marks love but mr as a fan while I don't think it's bad i think there's better songs out there.

Sam, "Dead Flowers" hit 37 on the chart but "White Liar" hit #1 and "House That Built Me," a song destined to be nominated for many awards, will reach there too. Albums needn't be 'best sellers' to be placed on a list to win an award. Sales are taken into equation but the album award is for art too, not just commerce.

I did enjoy taylors performance. She belted that song. And the choire was also a nice addition to an already awsome song. I'm not saying she's the best singer in the world I just think people are to hard on her maybee their jealouse. But her perfomances last night was flawless. I liked mirandas but unlike taylors while the house the built me is a sad song with no production Miranda almost put me to sleep. If that's what they look for in good female singer the. They got it. And while some might say shes a better singer than taylor, you can't seriously tell me her album revolution which the first single didn't even chart is better than Carrie underwoods play on, brad paisleys American Saturday night, lady antebellum debut album which baffles me as to how it made the running being over two years old but still a good album non the less and the zach brown bands foundatio which has sparked four about to be 5 number 1 hits no way revolution is better than all those amazing albums it didn't even deserve the nomination. That shouldve Ben reserved for dierks bently feel that fire or Billy currington little bit of everything or even darius rucker learn to live but not revolution. And need you now was good but give me a break better than toes, people are crazy, you belong with me, cowboy casoova red light to win single and song of the year I don't think so. And white liar video of the year are they crazy shouldve been boots on and everyoe knows that. It dosnt matte. What you say about Taylor you can't deny the fact that the ACMs were kissing mirandas butt last night for some ungodly reason.

My goodness, Sam, how in the world do you think Taylor's performance was right on? It was awful and how can you stand watching her perform with that hair slinging every which way. The right person got Female Vocalist. Compare Swift's & Miranda's performances...well there is none. Miranda was the one spot on! Aaron, I agree with your comment. Taylor has gotten way too much and not much talent backing it up.

While I enjoyed white lier. Swift shouldve won female vocalist. And she was spot on last night. Paisly shouldve wone entertainer of the year not poppy Carrie. Duo was right to go to Brooks and dunn. Wouldve liked to see group go to zach brown band but lady A did deserve it. Song and single should not have been white liar. It shouldve been people are crazy and red light. But I guess as currington says it people are crazy. Album should not have been revolution. Shouldve been the foundation by zach brown band or American Saturday night. They were feeling a little too Miranda happy for my taste last night. Even video cmon boots on was 10 times better than white liar. And the worst perfomances of the night Jason aldean Laura bell bundy and Kenny chesney. While standout performances were Miranda lambert, brad paisley, Carrie underwood Taylor swift, Darius rucker with what I hope will be his next single forever road, Keith urban and Billy currington.

I'm super happy for Miranda and Lady A on winning three awards each! They were very well deserved! I'm also super happy, and a bit surprised, that Carrie won Entertainer of the Year again. I know it may sound a bit mean but I'm glad Taylor Swift went home empty handed. Hopefully that means Swift fever is over and we can go back to awarding real country artists with the awards she unfortunately walked away with this past year.
