The Lunabelles - "A Place To Shine"

One of the defining traits of the recent crop of country newcomers has been the relative uniqueness of each artist’s sound.  Zac Brown, Lady Antebellum, Easton Corbin, Steel Magnolia, Randy Montana,  Jerrod Niemann, and the JaneDear Girls (among others) have all crafted sounds that make them stand out from the crowd (even if only a small amount).  Unfortunately, BNA newcomers the Lunabelles didn’t get that memo, as evidenced by their paint-by-numbers debut “A Place To Shine.” (Listen Here) They get points (in my book anyway) for steering away from the pop-country route, but the sound they manage to create seems to be lacking something – it’s pleasant enough, but very unremarkable, and more importantly not that memorable.

For a quartet they do harmonize well, though I wish it were a bit more of a focal point.  The lead singer’s voice is ok, though there’s nothing particularly special or emotive about it though.  The lyrics, about a girl trying to find herself, are serviceable but underdeveloped as the song doesn’t seem to go anywhere.   In the end, there’s nothing definitely bad or polarizing about this song, but on the same token, it just doesn’t do enough to garner much attention.  It’s a bit ironic, for a song about a girl trying to stand out, to find her “place to shine”, the song itself does nothing to help the Lunabelles stand out, and is unlikely to be their “place to shine”.
