LoCash Cowboys - "Here Comes Summer"

After over a year of waiting, we finally have the debut from Stroudavarious newcomers LoCash Cowboys, with the raucous summertime tune “Here Comes Summer.” Written by Jeffrey Steele, Shane Minor, and duo-mates Preston Brust and Chris Lucas, the song celebrates every summer pastime that can possibly be shoved into the 3 ½ minute romp.  Written presumably from the perspective of college age kids, the song goes from “boogie board, good lord, girls flirting working on a good tan…” to “jump into the jeep, drive out to the lake…” to “good timin’ all night and wakin’ up at noon on that little towel...”, showing that these boys certainly know how to enjoy their seemingly endless amounts of free time.

While the lyrics are a bit shallow, that’s to be expected to an extent with a fun summer song like this. But those lyrics are serviceably catchy and when mixed with the songs infectious melody, make for an enjoyable product that’s bound to get stuck in your head.  The song does have a few faults though.  In addition to the shallow theme, the song does lack a memorable lyric hook that may be necessary to make the song stand out (eg; the phrase “Here comes summer” isn’t nearly as memorable as say “Redneck yacht club”).  Nonetheless, “Here Comes Summer” is a disposable, yet infinitely fun summer tune that has a real chance to be a breakout summer hit.

Good Lord, I hated this song. My expectations aren't very high when it comes to summer songs, but this one aims low and misses lower. All they really do is rattle off a list of fun, summery stuff. List songs are extremely hard to write without sounding tacky. The only artists I've ever known who could pull it off were Alan Jackson with "Good Time" and Patty Loveless with "I Try to Think About Elvis." My review of this song was one of the meanest ones I've ever written. Read it if you dare: http://1to10countryreview.blogspot.com/2010/05/locash-cowboys-here-comes-summer.html
