Kenny Chesney With Dave Matthews - "I'm Alive"
By: Matt Bjorke
Known as the fun-loving, beer and rum-drinkin’, beach-combin’ poet or pirate (depending on your opinion of him), Kenny Chesney’s latest single shipped to country radio is certain to surprise those who tend to want to demonize the man as everything that’s wrong with country music circa 2009. “I’m Alive” is nothing like much of what appears on country radio and it feels much more like we’re getting a true glimpse into Kenny’s life.
Written by Kenny with Dean Dillon and Mark Tamborino, “I’m Alive” first found ears as a track on Willie Nelson’s “Waiting For Forever” record that was released in early 2008 and eventually made its way to Chesney’s own 2008 release “Lucky Old Sun” and was one of the ‘unreleased’ songs placed on “Greatest Hits II” earlier this year.
“It’s so damn easy to say that life’s so hard, everybody’s got their share of battle scars, as for me I’d like to thank my lucky stars that I’m Alive and well,
It’d be easy to add up all the pain and all the dreams you sat and watched go up in flames, dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain, but not me, I’m alive,
And today you know that’s good enough for me, breathin’ in and out is a blessing can’t you see, today’s the first day of the rest of my life, and I’m alive and well, yeah’ I’m alive and well”
This isn’t some token song written to get people out on the dance floor but rather a genuine reflection from Chesney and guest Dave Matthews (of the Dave Matthews Band) about the way they choose to live their lives. They could’ve been content to sit around and bitch and moan about their failure or the bad things that go on in their lives. Yes, they remember them all too well but they remember that they’re still alive, and able to breathe and that’s good enough for them to go on to see another day.
Simple, effective and acoustic, “I’m Alive” is a genuine piece of artistry and that’s good enough for me to recommend it to you.
