Kenny Chesney - "The Boys of Fall"
By: Matt Bjorke

If you were expecting another beacy-y or rockin’ tune from Kenny Chesney, you’re going to be disappointed (or elated?) that “Boys of the Fall” (click here to watch the video) isn’t one of these songs. Instead what we get is a meditation that recalls some of Chesney’s stronger tunes and those of heartland rock n roll legend Bruce Springsteen. The song – which was written by Casey Beathard and Dave Turnbull – is a strong lyrical ode to high school football or football in general.
The melody may be wholly contemporary but the lyrics of the song paint a brilliant picture of the emotions, the smells, the hard work that comes from being part of a football team. It may be a song for adolescents by the perpetually adolescent Chesney but it’s also one of his most passionate vocal deliveries in years. “The Boys of Fall” says “you mess with one, you got us all” and it describes small town life in a new and interesting way. In a lot of ways, I can picture a great music video using scenes from Friday Night Lights for this song.
As the theme song for Kenny’s upcoming documentary film, the song has a great platform from which to become a huge hit. It will also be the lead-off track from Hemingway’s Whiskey, which is due to be released this fall. The tune may not be the instant radio hit that “Everybody wants to go to Heaven” or other lead-off singles from other albums have been in the past but those tunes weren’t as good as this one, either. Kenny Chesney could've gone 'stereotype' and released a rockin' tempo-driven tune but instead he released this heartfelt ballad. If “Boys of the Fall” is an indication as to where Hemingway’s Whiskey is going then I’m pretty damn sure that one of country music’s biggest (and most oft-criticized male) stars has himself a monster of an upcoming album.

I am a former high school football player and I have trouble admitting that this song gets to me. I played my last down of football in 2004 and I still wish I could go back and put on the shoulder pads and helmet and go hit somebody. I love Payton's monologue at the beginning. It sets the rest of the video up perfectly.

Brenda you may be a pats fan but alot of us aren't. In fact I can't tand them. That being said I liked the video. Whether you like it or not Payton has more mainstream apeal than Brady and he always will. And seriously do you really think there are thousands apon thousands of pats fans becuase I'm sorry to tell you your sadly mistaken. All that being said the video couldn't and state that again couldn't have been better and the song is great too way to go Kenny on your comback

Great video....GREAT SONG....would be alot better if you hadn't left out one of the greatest players ever....Tom Brady! I know you are friends with Payton....but seriously....the ring count says it all....LOVE YOU KENNY...really do....but to leave out Tom is...well...the difference between a great video and an outstanding one...to me and thousands upon thousands of Pats fans around the world!

If you only listen to him on the radio you don't get a good picture of Kenny-The Artist. His live shows are awesome, I've seen about 10 of his and they were all awesome.

I agree with Gloria. Graduate from high school already. The truth is, with millions of fans, millions of dollars, an i-phone app, a radio station...he has no clue about living the small town life anymore. For someone who made sure that he could get as far away from it as possible, its a little insulting. Disappointing song, I think maybe he's running out of steam.

Gloria, just because he sings about playing on the beach or playing football doesn't mean he isn't grown up. I love his songs, he covers a wide range of topics if you listen to his CD's. If you only listen to him on the radio you don't get a good picture of Kenny-The Artist. His live shows are awesome, I've seen about 10 of his and they were all awesome. I'm so excited about his new album and can't wait until it comes out. Keep on rocking us Kenny!

I can really relate to this song. Living in a small town where football is the heart of our community. The many cold nights I sat on the bleachers cheering my son & his team mates on. Kenny always paints a picture of my life somehow in every song he sings. I get him, love & respect him, and couldn't be prouder of him. He's accomplished a lot, and its been a thrill watching him do so. Doesn't matter where I'm at during his shows, top of the bleeds or close & personal...he always gives a heart felt fun show. Can't wait for the album release date. Thanks Kenny, you did it again..another hit!

I have listened to a lot of KC's music. If you listen to the radio at all, you constantly hear him and I've been to a couple of his concerts as well. I just don't connect with Kenny. Some artist you connect with and some you don't. I'm sorry I just don't with Kenny. I have tried but just don't.

This song is fantastic. It really does paint the perfect picture of one of the biggest parts of autumn in small towns. Kenny sings it beautifully, and with tons of heart. And gloria, you clearly haven't listened to too many of his songs. What's wrong with reminiscing? Kenny has so many songs that cover a huge range of topics. This song will be a hit. Can't wait for the album.

Still the same old stuff from Chesney. If he's not dreaming about playing on the beach, he's dreaming about playing ball. He's 40ish but still living in his high school days. He needs to grow up.
