Julianne Hough - My Hallelujah Song
By: Matt Bjorke

Julianne Hough Danced into the hearts of country music fans with her first single "That Song In My Head." While only a Top 20 single, it was enough for the Dancing With The Stars dancer to score a Number One album. "My Hallelujah Song" is her follow-up single and based on the simple, ear-pleasing melody, it's easy to see why. It is also probably a smart move to keep second single one full of tempo due to the natural inclination of labels and radio to push soft ballads in the fall and winter. So the song works as counter programming.
Lyrically, though, there are problems with the song. The words are generically uplifting and really don't say anything at all. It basically finds Hough happily 'hittin' on what's been missin' all along, singing my hallelujah song." Say what? I guess that what she means is that you got to go out and get what you want and fight for it, or something along those lines. While the lyric is confusing and Hough's vocals aren't that much different than Kellie Pickler or Jessica Simpson, the delicious melody keeps the song from being a total loss and because of that, I certainly won't be compelled to turn the dial at country radio whenever it comes on.

Matt, I'd disagree that Julianne danced her way into the hearts of country music fans as I contend it was mostly "Dancing With The Stars" fans who purchased her album regardless of their musical inclinations. Her debut album sold strong right out of the chute to her "Stars" fan base even before the "Air In My Head" single had done much on radio so I would guess the quality of the music on the album wasn't a primary consideration for most buyers. They just wanted to show their pop-culture driven love and appreciation to Julianne for thrilling them on "Stars" week after week. Julianne was wise to head back to the show for the new season as that is where the majority of her fan base lies, not with Top 40 country radio listeners although there is plenty of overlap. Her music is pretty like she is but has all the depth of a puddle on a sidewalk after a quick rain.....

"While only a Top 20 single, it was enough for the Dancing With The Stars dancer to score a Number One single." Did you mean number one ALBUM?
