Joey + Rory - Cheater, Cheater
By: Allen Jacobs

With a voice as fresh as greens picked from a garden, Joey Martin is a refreshing breath of fresh air for contemporary country music. She is ½ of the husband-wife team of Joey+Rory. Recently signed to Sugar Hill/Vanguard Records, Joey+Rory co-wrote this song and sang it on CMT’s “Can You Duet,” a show which they placed third. Rory is barely audible harmony wise but he’s completely part of the duo in the sense that he’s one of Nashville’s most gifted songwriters (Crystal Shawanda’s “You Can Let Go” is but one recent example).
“Cheater, Cheater” is an honest-to-god pure country song that jumps out of the speakers. With lyrics that find Joey as the woman who’s been cheated on asking her man “Cheater, Cheater, where did you meet that ho?” It’s three minutes of tempo and while it remains to be seen whether radio will embrace this truly country duo, songs like “Cheater, Cheater” are what makes country music what it is: honest, true to life music.
Well Done.

Does anyone else think that Joey/Rory look like Trent Summar and Fran Drescher? Never mind... Now back to the topic at hand: I like these two a lot and think they will sell some music just because of their participation on CMT's "Can You Duet". Now how big of springboard that will be as a career launching tool remains to be seen. (This also applies to the Coppola Sisters who have the "cute twin females factor" in their favor.) CMT will give video support to all of the artists who competed in the "Duets" contest, BUT Top 40 country radio doesn't care one bit about what happens on the country music video channels (any of them) or in the print media at Country Weekly. If Sugar Hill/Vanguard tries Top 40 country radio and gets no response (my expectation) then they can go to familiar turf at Americana radio. The drawback there is that the whole Americana scene seems to pride itself on being the "Anti-Airhead Top 40 Country Establishment" (which CMT embodies these days) so who knows what type of reception J&R would receive in Americanaland. Apart from Bluegrass artists getting new music played on Bluegrass stations, its hard for traditional sounding country artists to find terrestial radio outlets to play their music these days. Hopefully at least one XM/Sirius country channel will adopt them.....
