Jody Booth - "Gold Digger"

In the grand tradition of singer/songwriters like Jim Lauderdale and Dean Dillon, Jody Booth presents a compelling debut single. Produced by Doug Deforest, “Gold Digger” is the kind of song that used to be played all the time on country music radio stations. With a puncy guitar leading the way with fiddles fillin’ the background with some atmosphere, Jody sings a lyric about the type of woman fathers always warn their sons about. Don’t fall for the girl with the ’10 cent heart and million dollar figure,’ cause more often than not, that woman is a ‘gold digger.’ Which means she’s the type of materialistic woman that will ‘be with a man’ until he’s ‘washed-up, beat-up’ and with his ‘back against the wall.’ The funny thing about the lyric of this song is that Booth narrates about how the woman took his buddy to the cleaners and despite knowing what type of woman she was, he fell under her spell too.
Jody Booth sings the lyric in a voice that recalls Neal McCoy while the song could easily have been on the latest record from George Strait, Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson or even Joe Nichols. It’s the kind of neo-traditionalist song that can help build a career and if Jody Booth’s whole album is as good as “Gold Digger,” I think we may have ourselves another neo-traditionalist to deal with. Here’s hoping stations outside of Texas get their hands on this tune and give it a chance.

I'd rather listen to Jody than most of the male artists on Top 40 country radio these days. On the other hand Jody is usually a female name, so maybe he could use Joey instead! Oh wait, Joey Martin (of Joey+Rory) and Joey Heatherton are women, so never mind. It could be worse, he could have been named Lynn! (lol)
