Jewel - Till It Feels Like Cheating
By: Matt Bjorke

With the release of her latest single, "Till It Feels Like Cheating" the crossover to country music is complete for Jewel. While the last two singles "I Do" and "Stronger Woman" both felt country at heart, they didn't have the complete country lyric and strains of steel guitar in the mix that is found here. John Rich's production is steady and there is actually a strong, classic country melodic undercurrent to the whole production. Jewel's vocal straddles the classic and contemporary quite nicely and the song really feels like it will be her break-out country hit.

I'm going to have to disagree with you Rick, I actually really like the "tricks" she can do with her voice. I agree they're not truly country but if she can find a way to adapt them to country she'd probably be one of the best in her generation. I do wonder if she'll stick to country from here on out or will she go back to Pop?

I like Jewel as a person but the way she stylizes her vocals to "personalize" them drives me absolutely bananas! I find the way Jewel sings live to be absolutely unbearable. Her performance on Nashville Star was the epitome of what I'm referring to and her Opry performances are the same. IF Jewel would just sing in a straight ahead, less mannered, non-ornamented vocal style I think she'd be accepted a whole lot quicker by country radio. Just because Jewel can do all those "tricks" with her voice doesn't mean she should......
