Jason Michael Carroll - Where I'm From

Jason Michael Carroll scored three sizeable hits from his debut CD and “Where I’m From” is the first single from his new record and despite a strong vocal, the song cannot be saved from the lazy, clichéd lyrics that have bogged down many singles over the years.  In the first verse we here of a guy’s happy upgrade to first class and while talking to a frequent first-class flier, Jason decides to describe, in laundry-list form, his hometown.  In the second verse we learn that Jason’s flying to LA to get his cancer stricken, soon to die brother. The third verse has the Armani-wearing guy saying that he’s not always been the big successful dude but was once the small-town QB who married the homecoming queen.

It’s just all too Disney for me.  While I don’t mind a song like this every now and again, it is a bit tiresome to hear them from time to time. Despite my own thoughts, this song will likely be another hit for Jason Michael Carroll and perhaps, over time, it will grow on me.  It’s not a bad song; it’s just not a great one.

You must not have a hometown worth being proud of, because for those of us who love our roots (no matter how weak or strong they may be), this song is fantastic... and doesn't get old. Jordan, don't let one bad review break it for you. Give it a listen on your own, then decide for yourself. Rick, sad as it is, the artists and label have to focus on what's radio worthy because without sales and resonance (artists name, brand) are a long shot. IE: Whitney Duncan. Great artist, weak local airplay. XM does a great job, but there are only so many of us paying to listen to commercial-free radio.

You say its a "disney" song, but being from a small town this song really hit home. Hes talking about taking pride in where hes from. I swore up and down my whole life I would not come back to where I spent 18 years, but.... guess what? I DID! This song is exactly me. I am proud to be a farmers daughter outside of a town with the population of 5,500 people in the middle of the USA. I grew up in the wooden white church and where the clock on the courthouse doesnt work. (which both are honestly true) You are probably from a city and dont understand this song, but for those of us who are proud to be what we were raised as, its a great song!! Just because you dont relate to it doesnt mean its not a good song!

I really liked about half the songs on Jason's debut album but those did not include "Livin Your Love Song" or the dopey "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead". Why they didn't release the wonderful duet with Jewel or "I'm Still Lookin' At You" is beyond me. I think the artists and labels are so focused on trying to please airhead programmers at Top 40 country stations that they lose their common sense. Jason is a unique talent and I hope the new album is at least as good as the first one.

I haven't heard it yet, but judging from what you wrote I'm not sure I want to. I really like Jason's voice but his singles haven't really een all that great. "Alyssa Lies" was a good song vocally, but felt a little forced lyrically. "Livin' Our Love Song" was really catchy, but again lyrically weak. "I Can Sleep When I'm Dead" was fun and vocally good but again lyrically boring. There was some really good songs on his album that could've been released but now never will be.
