Jacob Lyda - "I'm Doing Alright"
By: Matt Bjorke
Do you remember where you were when you first heard Merle Haggard or Joe Nichols orAlan Jackson? Well, that’s the feeling I felt the first time I heard Jacob Lyda sing his national debut single “I’m Doing Alright.” Co-written by Lyda and Paul Overstreet (“Some Beach” “On The Other Hand” “Love Can Build A Bridge”), “I’m Doing Alright” (Listen Here) is the kind of song that finds a man taking a one step and day at a time as lives his life. He speaks of the simple things that help him get through the day, particularly with the comfort of ‘the love of my life by my side’ so no matter what people may think, he is doing alright and happy with the direction his life has taken.
It’s as simple as a piece of cornbread but this is the kind of song that has helped people get through what they think are problems with their lives and realize that they don’t need to have new this or new that to keep up with the Joneses if they just learn to be happy with the good things they DO have in life. And for the narrator, Jacob Lyda, that’s enough for him. The melody is sweet and instantly warm, just like Lyda’s vocal. Like Easton Corbin, Jacob Lyda seems to have the kind of neo-traditionalist voice that just feels like it was meant to be played all over the radio dial.
While being signed to a smaller label makes the chance for success on the charts all the tougher, if anyone can get around that small fact, it’s a a talent like Jacob Lyda, particularly with a song as strong as "I'm Doing Alright."

The song has a groovy feel right from the first notes. You can't help but tap your foot along or bob your head with the beat as the verse gets into full swing. The lyrics speak of simple things that make the narrator's life alright, showing that simpler is sometimes better. The instrumental accompianment fits in with the "simpler is better" theme of the song. The instruments are more laid back, except for when the guitar solo comes in. The laid back beat helps excentuate the relaxed feel of the lyrics. Lyda's vocals fit the relaxed feel of the song, never going over the top. It's a nice song that is produced wonderfully! I give the song 5 stars out of 5.
