Jack Ingram - "Free"
By: Matt Bjorke

Jack Ingram's mainstream radio career has been spotty (at best) and while radio failed to get the brilliant single "Seeing Stars" up the charts, they have helped him get hits like last year’s Top 10 hit “Barefoot and Crazy” and the chart-topper “Wherever You Are” and several other Top 20 hits in his tenure with Big Machine Records. So with that track record, it will be interesting to see how Jack gets his single “Free” up the charts.
Written by Jay Knowles an d Trent Summar, “Free” is a track that finds Jack singing lyrics that discuss how the simplest things in life are often the best things on our lives and they aren’t worth ‘trad(ing) for anything.’ With a progressive melody that really gets atmospheric but retains banjos and fiddles in the mix, “Free” sounds and feels like it could really be the anthem for the summer of 2010 and that is ultimately what will help Jack Ingram get airplay and regain a positive momentum at country radio. The single could also very easily cross-over to Adult Pop/rock stations that mix Coldplay and Petty together as this single has a hint of both those artists inside it’s DNA and while it may ‘alienate’ a few traditionalists, it also makes this song even more likable and ‘relatable.’

I've just never thought Jack Ingram was a good singer, so maybe it will do good on country radio because you don't really have to sing good to get airplay. He just doesn't appeal to me.

This song sucks. It's easily the worst song on his newest album. Besides that, it's not even a song I could see Jack singing. This song isn't any good, which is mostly why it'll probably do good on today's country music charts. That's Nashville for ya.

This song definitely belongs on country radio. Jack is an on the mark artist who has passion for his writing as well as his shows.

LOVE this song! After hearing it I've decided to go buy the album after work.
